As
part of its Capital Campaign, TERI has developed a plan to establish
a new and innovative facility- The Center for Life Planning.
As
the seventh largest city in the United States, the time is long
past for San Diego County to offer a full range of diagnostic and
support services to individuals with developmental disabilities
across their lifespan. It is important that these services
are centralized and well known within our community as a resource
for those who have developmental disabilities, their family members,
teachers, physicians, therapists, and friends. The TERI
Center for Life Planning proposes to fill this need.
The
Center will offer a continuum of diagnostic, consultation,
educational and support services to children with developmental
disabilities and their family members across the lifespan.
These services will be specifically directed at life quality and
gaining access to those services, supports, and skills that allow
individuals to prosper despite their disabling condition. Once the
medical diagnosis has been made, there is still a life left to live.
To live it to the fullest requires help from trained professionals,
family, friends, and paraprofessionals familiar with the unique
needs of children and adults who have developmental disabilities.
Centralizing
these services aids not only in simplifying the access of services,
but also allows for the development of collegial relationships among
professionals who have dedicated their lives to serving this population.
The TERI Center for Life Planning intends
to gather these professionals into one location not only to provide
direct services but to focus on applied research designed to improve
life quality. The services of this Center
would be made available to school districts, medical personnel,
and universities for the purpose of ongoing research and training
in best practice procedures.
When
fully operational, The TERI Center for Life Planning
will provide the following services:
Counseling for families in the areas of therapeutic interventions
(speech, physical, occupational and recreational therapy; behavioral
management), daily living needs, long-term planning, and self-advocacy.
Applied research in best practice procedures for training and supporting
individuals with developmental disabilities.
Training for community and family members, professionals, and paraprofessionals
in methods for supporting children and adults with developmental
disabilities
Provision of professional inservices, conferences, and education
to students, interns, teachers, social workers, medical personnel
and other professionals associated with this human service field.
It is planned that the Center will be an accredited
adjunct to local state and private university/college programs and
as such able to offer approved practicum, student teaching, and
internship programs.
A single, central location for receiving all consultation needed
to offer quality support to individuals with developmental disabilities
throughout the lifespan.
The development and operation of model programs for this population
which will be housed onsite for both children and adults.
The dissemination of information gathered through research and model
programs via the publication of manuals, articles, and research
papers on best practice procedures as well as presentations at national
professional conferences.
Start-up
funding for this Center is dependent upon grants
and private donations. Ongoing funding will be provided by
insurance companies, school districts, Medi-Cal or other state/federal
funds available to individuals, private pay, donations, scholarships,
and grants. In addition, the Center will
secure partnerships with local universities and medical facilities
for joint research. Ultimately, it is the goal that the TERI
Center for Life Planning is supported through a foundation
that offers sufficient funding to supplement projects and efforts
that cannot adequately be funded through other resources.
TERI
currently offers a number of services and supports that will be
incorporated into The Center for Life Planning.
These include our consultation services, the development and operation
of model programs, annual applied research projects, community training
and conference provision, and the dissemination of materials on
best practice procedures.
You
can leave a lasting legacy by underwriting the construction of this
facility or establishing a foundation specifically established to
support The Center for Life Planning. For

project and directly impact life quality for children and adults
